Approved initially in 2009 by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors, the Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment serves as the university’s guiding framework around sustainability and energy efficiency in campus operations, facilities, curriculum, and research. In  2019, President Tim Sands called for its renewal and revision to ensure the most stringent climate and sustainability standards are implemented as Virginia Tech continues to grow and seeks to be a leader in environmental stewardship. The 2020 Climate Action Commitment builds upon a decade of university sustainability efforts.
 

 Updates around the revision process

March 2021 - Approved

  • The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors received a recap of the comprehensive financial review that took place following the presentation of the 2020 Climate Action Commitment recommendations in November 2020.

  • The Board approved the 2020 Climate Action Commitment on March 22, 2021.

November 2020

  • To ensure successful long-term implementation of the Climate Action Commitment, a comprehensive financial review of the pathways and outcomes prescribed is commissioned following the meeting.

November 2019

Call for updates to Climate Action Commitment: President Tim Sands called for the renewal of and revisions to the Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment to ensure the most stringent climate and sustainability standards are implemented as Virginia Tech continues to grow and seeks to be a leader in environmental stewardship.

December  2019

Committee to Review and Update Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment Launched: Working Group charged with leading the revisions process (VT News article).

Winter/Spring 2020

Working Group, Subcommittees Meet on an Ongoing Basis to Develop Recomendations: Subcommittee membership consisted of nearly 125 students, faculty, and staff from a wide range of units. Subcommittee focus areas included agriculture, energy, climate justice, community engagement, procurement, and more.

March 2020

Campus Community Engages in Revision Process: The Community Engagement Subcommittee hosted 12 Zoom convenings attended by nearly 200 stakeholders from the university, alumni, and regional communities, and beyond.

Working Group Compiles Subcommittee Recomendations.

Fall 2020

Technical Report with Proposed Recomendations Approved by Pinkney.

Report with Recomendations Moves through University Governance Process.

Graduate Student Assembly, Student Government Association, Faculty Senate, Staff Senate: Review and dialogue complete.

Energy & Sustainability Committee: Reading and review complete.

Commission on University SupportSept. 17, 2020: Commission on University Support: Reading and review complete. Oct. 15, 2020: Commission on University Support: Reading 2 and review complete.

University Council: Oct. 5, 2020: University Council: Initial presentation complete. Oct. 19, 2020: University Council: Reading 1 complete. Nov. 2, 2020: University Council: Reading 2 and vote complete.

Board of Visitors: Nov. 15-16, 2020: Virginia Tech Board of Visitors presentation. Complete.

Fall - Winter 2020-21

Financial Review: To help ensure successful long-term implementation of the next Climate Action Commitment, a comprehensive financial review of the pathways and outcomes prescribed by the commitment was conducted.

March 2021

Board of Visitors review: An update on the financial review process will be presented to the Board of Visitors in March 2021, along with a proposed resolution to approve the latest iteration of the Climate Action Commitment.

Board of Visitors APPROVAL: The Board of Visitors approved the 2020 Virginia Tech Climate Action Commitment.
